Alebrijes: A Mural by The Students of Litchfield High School
On June 9th, students from Litchfield High School debuted their Alebrijes mural inside of @ The Corner Taco Bar in downtown Litchfield.
Although many of them were already familiar with the Alebrijes from the movie “Coco,” the AP Spanish students, taught by Señora Hogan, helped research the art history of the Zapotec folk art spirit animals. The Zapotec are a civilization from the three Central Valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico in the late 6th Century BCE. Today, the craftspeople from Oaxaca carve and paint these mythical figures with intricate and colorful designs.
To begin, the students and I printed off infographics in English and Spanish for patrons.
There were two students in particular who put much time and effort into the mural: Allison Donovan and Josh White. Over the course of 6 months, utilizing only lunch blocks, the mural was complete.
I would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Pascento, The Litchfield High School Principal, and Jayne Lamphear, owner of @ the Corner Taco Bar for their openness and enthusiasm for not only public art but for kids and their connections to the greater community project.
I plan to be doing more, so stay tuned!
